Meet the Team: Steffie from Greenwood

Ciao everyone,

I am Steffie and I have been working at the Wasteless Pantry Greenwood since the beginning of 2021.

I am very grateful for this opportunity because I can practice my sustainability values while earning a living and being inspired by the people at the shop, employees and customers alike.

My background is varied: from biology to art, from sustainability to community education; all the above have in common my willingness to make a difference, how great or small, in the environment, economy and society we all live in. I hope to be a change maker, a keen listener and learner with a big smile on my face.

One of my discoveries at the WP has been the mug tea strainer. It is very practical because it fits various mug sizes. You can serve your favourite loose leafed tea in as many cups as you need, reducing your dish washing of the tea pot (I know, the less dishes I have to wash the happier I am!!!), plus it’s handy when you are brewing your next batch of kombucha in a large pot.

My favourite food at the WP is hard to nail down, because the shop caters for all your sweet or salty cravings!! I probably cannot resist the sesame slices. They are perfect squares of tasty goodness waiting there for you to be rescued, or maybe the other way around.

My waste free mantra is “do the best you can, with what you have and where you are”. It applies to life in general as well. The choices we make have to be fine tuned to our situation and wellbeing and must be ultimately SUSTAINABLE FOR US as well, in long term.

So, please do come and say hello, next time you drop in to do your shopping.

Meet the Team: Amelia at Greenwood

Hi, I am Amelia, the owner of the Greenwood store which opened in October 2018.⠀

I grew up as part of a farming family the WA wheat belt before moving to Perth to start university and then a career in Accounting. I then lived in the UK for 10 years where I met my husband and had two lovely daughters. In 2007 we all came back and settled into the community in and around Duncraig. We have two dogs who are much loved by all of us. I love hiking, reading, cooking, swimming and yoga (and I used to be pretty decent at badminton) but managing the store takes almost all of my time nowadays. It’s a good thing I love spending my time there – helping our lovely customers with the support of the very talented and committed Greenwood team is more rewarding than any job I have ever had!⠀

My favourite non-food product is the reusable baking liners. I love baking with my girls and these liners work perfectly and survive year after year with heaps of use. We have some cut out ready to go for each of our frequently used baking tins. As for favourite food products, all the pantry staples are awesome but I do have a particular weakness for our honey cashews when I am feeling like a sweet treat and for the smoked almonds when I fancy something savoury.⠀

My tip for switching to a waste-free pantry is don’t think you have to do it all in one hit. As you run out of something, just put whatever clean and empty container works for you (label it first!) into a box/bag/basket. Then just bring them into the store to fill. No need to even write a shopping list 😉 and easy to unpack when you get home! If you use a lot of a particular product and don’t like to run out before refilling, rotate between two containers so that when one gets low, you put the second one in. ⠀

Look forward to seeing you in the store!

Meet the Team: Deb at Greenwood

Hi, my name is Deb, I work at the Greenwood Pantry store and have been part of the team since we opened nearly 2 years ago.⠀

I’m a mother of two, and also have a lot of pets; current count is 10 chickens, 4 guinea pigs (plus 2 foster piggies), 2 rabbits (plus fosters), 2 cats and a dog- all rescued from shelters. In my spare time I volunteer for a rabbit and guinea pig rescue. I like to draw and paint for relaxation and also belong to a bushwalking group.⠀
My favourite product at Wasteless Pantry would have to be the detergent bar, it’s such a powerful cleaner that I clean my whole kitchen with it- even my oven. It makes your drinking glasses sparkle too.⠀

My favourite food item that we stock is TVP, it’s so nutritious and versatile, I like to add flavour with our vegan beef-style stock. TVP is perfect for everything from tacos to bolognese and is an inexpensive, cruelty-free option.⠀
Going zero-waste is challenging, but shopping with your own containers at stores like ours make it a lot easier. I find that it’s best to focus on eliminating one item at a time, or focus on one area of your home, eg. the bathroom- you could switch to shampoo bars, solid soaps, a shaving puck, reusable razors, etc. ⠀
My other suggestions are; join your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook, shop in charity shops, repair or upcycle items you already own, enrol in an Earth Carers course and share the information you learn with family and friends.
