Give More, Waste Less: Turning Your Holiday Scraps into Zero-Waste Gold
The Ultimate Zero-Waste Challenge
We challenge you to make one new thing this year from your holiday kitchen “waste.” You’ll not only achieve a new level of zero-waste living, but you’ll also save money and create incredibly useful staples—or even personalized gifts!
Every scrap you save is an environmental and economic win.
Scrap Hack 1: The Freezer-to-Staple Stock
Don’t buy pre-packaged, salty stock! Your vegetable scraps hold the key to the freshest broth you’ll ever make.
- How-To: Keep a large container or silicone bag in your freezer labeled “Stock Scraps.” Throughout your holiday cooking, toss in onion ends, carrot peels, celery leaves, herb stems (except cruciferous veggies, which can get bitter), and garlic skins.
- The Transformation: When the container is full, simmer the scraps in water for 1-2 hours, strain, and you have rich, homemade vegetable stock.
Scrap Hack 2: DIY Zero-Waste Citrus Cleaner
Citrus peels—from your holiday drinks or baking zest—should never go to waste!
- How-To: Place your citrus peels (orange, lemon, grapefruit) in a large jar. Fill the jar completely with bulk white vinegar.
- The Transformation: Seal and let it infuse for 2-3 weeks. Strain out the peels, and pour the resulting aromatic vinegar into a reusable spray bottle. You now have a natural, streak-free, citrus-scented, all-purpose household cleaner!
Scrap Hack 3: The Gift of Pantry Mix
If you’ve made a fresh batch of stock or dried a beautiful mix of herb stems, why not gift it? Package your scrap-turned-staples in a clean, reusable jar with a simple label. Homemade, thoughtful, and truly wasteless gifts are always the best.
